FreeDMR

FreeDMR is an open-source DMR experimentation platform and network derived from HBLink. It was built for amateur-radio operators: people with a wide range of equipment and, often, hobby-level computing or programming experience.

Its important properties are federation, independent operator control, interoperability, accessibility and an implementation that people can inspect and modify. It also carries implementation artefacts inherited from HBLink.

Proportionate security

FreeDMR is non-essential, non-safety-critical and operates largely through community trust. Its security is deliberately lightweight. Applying enterprise or high-assurance controls mechanically would add complexity and barriers that work against its purpose, while encryption may be inappropriate or prohibited in amateur-radio contexts.

That does not make FreeDMR a model for secure enterprise infrastructure. It makes it an example of fitting controls, complexity and assurance to the real system, consequence, threat and operating community.
